Mental Health and Criminal Law Seminar - 23rd January 2015

ACJRD, in association with the Irish Mental Health Lawyers Association and Dublin City University, held a seminar on "Mental Health and Criminal Law" at the Law Society of Ireland on Friday, 23rd January, 2015.

Mr. Kris Gledhill, University of Auckland, was the keynote speaker with a paper entitled "Mental Disorder and Liability to Punishment: Recent English Developments". Kris Gledhill - Presentation

From an Irish perspective, Mr. Tom O'Malley, National University of Ireland, Galway, presented his paper "Mental Disorder and Proportionate Punishment" and Ms. Aine Hynes, Irish Mental Health Lawyers Association, presented her paper "Operating The Criminal Law (Insanity) Act: a Legal Practitioner's Perspective". Effects of Alcohol and Illicit Drugs on Mental Health - 10th April 2014

The ACJRD Addiction and Mental Health Working Groups held the seminar: "Effects of Alcohol and Illicit Drugs on Mental Health" on Thursday 10th April. This event was hosted by the Probation Services in their offices in Smithfield.

The seminar featured the following presentations, click on the speaker names to download a copy of their presentations:

"Illicit Drugs and Mental Health" Dr Des Corrigan, consultant to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Addiction (EMCDDA), former lecturer in Pharmacology, Trinity College, and former chair of the National Advisory Committee on Drugs.

"Adolescent Substance Use and Mental Heath" Dr Bobby Smyth, Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist, Senior Clinical Lecturer, Trinity College Dublin and a member of the National Advisory Committee on Drugs & Alcohol.

Mental Health Seminar - 27th June 2013

ACJRD and the ACJRD Mental Health Working Group held a Mental Health Seminar entitled Mental Health in the Criminal Justice System: Legal Trends and Research Results at the Law Society on 27th June 2013.

Speakers at the Seminar included:

Dr. Conor O'Neill, Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist, Central Mental Hospital: Dr. O'Neill's presentation summarised the findings of the recent report entitled Implementing a court diversion and liaison scheme in a remand prison by systematic screening of new receptions: a 6 year participatory action research study of 20,084 consecutive male remands McInerney C, Davoren M, Flynn G, Mullins D, Fitzpatrick M, Caddow M, Caddow F, Quigley S, Black F, Kennedy HG, O'Neill C International Journal of Mental Health Systems 2013, 7:18 (25 June 2013).
